What do you think?

Reading de Tocqueville in class the question has arisen: do Americans value equality above liberty?

What are your thoughts?

Wow, that's an interesting question. I think sometimes yes, sometimes no, and sometimes niether. It usually depends on if it will benefit themselves at the moment.

I'd say people want equality in the sense of an equal playing field without discriminations, and liberty to explore the playing field to its extent. So in that sense, liberty and equality are interwoven: without the liberty to explore, there is no equality unless all are refused that liberty.

My thought was that without equality you do not have the liberty to seek your own dreams. If a society does not see everyone as equal in their value, then they would not have the liberty to pursue goals and progress in society.
